We're giving Charlotte and the gang a day off today as we focus on Claire (along with one of the members of her band Death Kitties, Loud) as she visits a store similar to what we have around here in the U.S.A. known as 'Half-Price Books', which is mainly a bookstore that buys and sells old books and magazines, but also has DVDs, Blu-Ray, VHS, and of course, retro video games!
Here she finds out pretty much the horrible reality that is retro gaming today and their insanely high prices.
This is actual based off a discovery of my own even. It seems Conker's Bad Fur Day for the Nintendo 64 goes for INSANE amounts of money now as I in fact did stumble on a copy of just the game cart for $109 in a retro game store.
For just the GAME CART.
Now if you add the instructions and cardboard box, that can greatly increase the price as games that come with even just their original cardboard boxes from the NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance era go for way higher than the carts alone due to them being a bit more rare for someone to still have.
For those that aren't familiar with what Conker's Bad Fur Day is...Think cutesy Looney Tunes-like characters and stuff with strong rated R content added.
Here's a video to show you probably one of the game's most famous scenes...(Warning: language and gross humor ahead.)
-----------------------------------------------
Also, one more thing. the store clerk might look familiar to someone out there...she's from a comic found here on Comic Fury (just aged up a bit).
No surprising, I mean you can already consider them as antiques and let alone in good working condition.
I never got to play on N64, but thanks to YouTube, that song has become one of my favorite game song.
Almost eerie to think of retro video games as 'antiques', but it does make sense. They come from a different era of video gaming.
Shame though they're priced like they were diamonds or gold.
Should have said vintage but that was the first word that comes to mind.
That's why people tends to hold on to old stuffs, I mean who know when they'll be worth a fortune
Also, MMPR Red Ranger phone case! Nice! XD
Holy crap, those prices! I know those NES and such games got expensive, but even an n64 game...Dammmnn!
Yeah, N64 games are seriously rising in price now. Most likely because now the kids that played those games are nostalgic for them, so up go the prices!
I know, it's crazy. Just last month I sold my Chrono Trigger SNES for $190 and that was on the low side! o.O
Yeah, that's another one of those games I'm all "It's seriously going for THAT much!?"
I have like 3 versions of Chrono Trigger even. The SNES one, the Nintendo DS one, and the one in the Final Fantasy Collection on the PSX.
Haha, yeah, and they're not getting any cheaper from here... went to a game con this weekend, and a bunch of stands sold old games so I decided to look around for a few games I wanted to try... I was surprised at how much Banjo-Tooie went for now (at least the PAL version), and for just the cart? Didn't think it would be that much more expensive than the original Banjo (which is still going for "decent" prices) I just want to try some games I never got to play as a kid, dammit!
And even certain Gamecube games are starting to get pretty expensive at this point... had to pay a lot for Thousand Year-Door last year...
Especially annoying when you prefer a boxed version of games (manual not even required but a nice bonus) but all you can find for the game you want is "disc/cart-only" and "SUPER RARE NEVER OPENED MINT CONDITION BOXED" (Warioware Twisted, whyyyy...)
The whole 'complete' thing and pricing is one of the major reasons why all but ONE of my original NES games is just the game carts.
I do have a few instruction manuals as well, but those cardboxes...
With disc games I refuse to buy them unless they at least come with their actual cases.
Yeah, all my N64 games so far are also just the carts... boxed versions tends to be a bit over my budget/a bit more than what I'm willing to pay for the game.
For GBA and DS, however, I want the box (the carts are so small, they'd just get lost!) and for disc games I'm definitely gonna need the box.
I keep most of my Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games all in a small box together myself for easy access.
DS and 3DS games NEED those cases of theirs because they're insanely small... When I see the games in pawn shops or used game stores without their cases I just think how on Earth anyone could not keep them...kid or otherwise.
I'd hate to see the price of StarTropics with the unused feelies to discover the in-game code...
StarTropics is actually one of those NES games that the price really hasn't skyrocketed compared to some. So even with all of its stuff complete, it would probably be not very expensive compared to say, Super Mario Bros. 3 or The Legend of Zelda.
I love going to Half Price Books, mostly because they have cheap graphic novels and DVDs, but I have seen the price of Retro games and it's a bit frightening. :O
Yes. Funny thing is Half-Price Books is one of the more reasonable places for retro game prices. I've actually picked up a number of 3DS games from them even for half the prices they generally go for.
Yep.
Fire Emblem DS remake: 70-80 plus import.
Just the cartridge: 15 plus import.
(in GBP)
I am glad I do not need the boxes and stuff :D
Boxes and instructions are for hardcore collectors and completionists anyway. XP
When you first realize something you grew up with has become "vintage", in part because it has become scarce it can really catch you off guard.
Disconnect between things like the value of money then versus now also can throw one off. Sure a complete Conker's Bad Fur Day is pricey, but was when it released how much did it cost? $60 in 2001 is like $80 now, and there are other factors to consider.
True, but back in the early 2000's before the retro game market craze even started places like pawn shops were practically giving away retro games for nothing because people didn't care back then.
I remember finding Earthbound TWICE at a local pawn shop (and bought) for under $5 since back then all SNES games were $5.
...back then wouldn't SNES games have been the equivalent of PS3/X-Box 360 games, and $5 was only $0.15 USD below the national minimum wage? :D
It is hard to get a good read on prices... rather it is much easier! Back in the day you were lucky if there was some sort of price guide that was likely months (if not years!) out of date. Now you mostly just need the correct website or some time, patience and competence with a spreadsheet. XD
I became a Fire Emblem fan last year after playing Awakening, and after looking for the Gamecube and Wii games I understand this so much, haha. I'm lucky I have a friend who bought those games back when they first came out, so I don't have to pay double the price to play them!
Yeah, it's crazy what some games are going for now. I would love to play a number of NES games that late in the system's life not many people bought legitimately, but when their asking prices for just the carts can go upwards of $800(11)...yeah, I'm good.
...aaaaaaand now I'm sure I'll never get to play Bad Fur Day :(
This got me thinking, so I just looked and apparently Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (one of my favorite games of all time) goes used for over $90, and it came out in 2005. If you want it new, it'll be $200 at least.
Also Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (2007) goes for around $80 new. I'm so glad I got them back when they were new, because there's no way I would have them now. Money's expensive, you know.
And, apparently, Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword (known in the US as Fire Emblem), which came out in 2003, goes used for over $40. I never imagined a GameBoy Advance game would ever be that expensive. (I almost had a heart attack when I saw how much a copy goes for).
I wonder how much Fresh-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland goes for... o____o;
It's almost worth how much it costs.
And there's your random gaming trivia from me for the day.
Only way I think some people will get to play some games from the past now is emulation or if they're downloadable on game system stores.
Just crazy...
I never even got into Fire Emblem until Awakening on 3DS myself.
I worked at Toys R Us back in 2003, and we had a pile of unsold Bad Fur Day games. It was heaped in the back room with piles among piles of games no one wanted, like GBA Battlebots and Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever.
Funny how times change. If only I had bought up some of those BFD's.
I still remember getting my brand new copy of Earthbound from Best Buy at $5 back in the day. Still have it all, too.
Just the fact that games people largely ignored are going for crazy amounts of money now.
Another game I have is crazy pricey that no one apparently cared about initially is The Misdaventures of Tron Bonne.
Thats why I am a horder... never giving up any of my goods and keeping them intact and complete for as long as possible!
... selling them? I would never dare! :p
... and who IS that girl? :-|
I sold so many games and stuff in the past I wish I hadn't. I was a kid back then though, I didn't know any better. I wanted the next new thing!
Also, the girl in the comic is actually an aged up version of Chelsea, a character from this comic here...

Friend of mine recently made 600 bucks online for earthbound and mega man x.
I don't doubt it. If you go to the right places you can make a small fortune off your retro games if you're willing to part with them.
my cousins owned that game and it totally WARPED ME!
Conker's Bad Fur Day really looked like a game for kids. Boy was it not. XD
